Investment Casting

Investment casting is an industrial process based on and also called lost-wax casting, one of the oldest known metal-forming techniques. The process allows the production of components with accuracy, repeatability, versatility and integrity in a variety of metals and high-performance alloys. Unlike other metals, investment casting of magnesium products poses various challenges which emerge due to the complexity of design, mold design, metal flow challenges etc. Hindustan Magnesium Products have successfully innovated new processes for investment casting of magnesium alloys which include dual-wax process for parts having internal cores or hollow parts. The picture above illustrates an example of the process.

In the dual-wax process, two types of waxes are used. The blue wax is the main wax & the white wax is the support wax which is later removed by a process of dewaxing. This allows us to get the exact pattern which is further investment casted. The picture below shows the semi-final casting in magnesium, the total weight of the part is around 3 kgs only.

The benefits of investment casting for magnesium include the following :
  • Highly suited for volume production since patterns can be easily reproduced from the mold.
  • High precision & smooth surface finsh.
  • Reduction of production costs in many applications.
  • Faster process, hence can produce higher volume of parts.
However, the disadvantages include higher initial costs due to manufacture of mold, inability to produce certain complex castings, restriction on the size of castings etc.
