Sand Casting

A sand casting or a sand molded casting is a cast part produced by forming a mold with the help of a model or pattern pressed into a sand mixture and then removed, after which molten liquid metal is poured into the cavity in the mold. The mold is then cooled until the metal has solidified. In the last stage, the casting is separated from the mold. Sand casting is a pretty simple process adopted by a
number of companies across the world if the metal to be casted is iron, steel, aluminium etc. However, sand casting of magnesium parts poses many challenges, which include metal to mold reactions, possibility of metal explosion in the mold and issues with the microstructure of the final product. Sand casting is suited for high-integrity castings requiring special processing which are also limited in numbers. Hence, aerospace & space research organizations are industry segments who majorly require sand castings.

The benefits of sand casting for magnesium include the following :

  • No limitation on component size or geometry.
  • More economical for batch type production than any other process.
  • Parts with internal cores are also possible by this process.

However, the disadvantages include high cost of production for larger quantities, metal to mold reaction, poor linear tolerance, rough surface finish and limitation on wall thicknesses.
